Named as England's favourite market town by Country Life magazine, Hexham is an historic, bustling town in the heart of the Tyne Valley. We are staying at the nearby Slaley Hall Hotel, an Edwardian mansion in 1000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest, now an elegant luxury hotel. We include visits to the historic city of Durham, the city of Newcastle (including guide), Kielder Water, Hadrian's Wall and the city of Carlisle.
The 4 star Q Hotels Slaley Hall is an elegant hotel set in 1000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest. All bedrooms are en suite, with TV, telephone, tea making facilities, trouser press, hairdryer and Wi-Fi. The food is classic British with a local, contemporary twist and the wine list is extensive. There is a health club with pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, gym and spa treatments. There is a lift.
We travel via the historic city of Durham with its famous castle and cathedral. We continue to the Q Hotels Slaley Hall for 3 nights half board accommodation.
The city of Newcastle is our destination today, our route taking us via Blanchland, Edmundbuyers and the Derwent Resevoir. We will be joined by a local guide, who will take us on a fascinating tour of the city with the remainder of the day free for shopping and sightseeing.
A visit to Northumbria is not complete without a visit to Kielder, the biggest man-made lake in Northern Europe and, at over 250 square miles, the largest working forest in England. We visit the Tower Knowe Visitor Centre, a great place to discover the area's rich history. We return to Slaley via Hexham with its beautiful abbey.
We take a scenic drive home via Hadrian's Wall and onwards to the city of Carlisle. After an extended break we continue our journey, arriving home late afternoon.
