Depart early morning and transfer to Holyhead for our afternoon sailing to Dublin. We journey to Trim for overnight half board accommodation at the Trim Castle Hotel.
We visit Strokestown Park House, an 18th century Palladian mansion preserved with its original furnishings and fabrics. During the famine the landlord of the time chartered 'coffin ships' to transport his evicted tenants to America and the recently re-opened famine museum includes letters from former tenants. Leave time to explore the restored garden with the largest herbaceous border in Ireland. We continue to Westport for 4 nights accommodation at the Castlecourt Hotel.
We head along the shores of Clew Bay, with breath-taking views of the islands and Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s Holy Mountain, through the Doo Lough Valley, a long lake set amongst the Sheefy Hills and the steep slopes of the Mweelrea Mountains to the village of Leenane, the location for 'The Field'.
We enjoy a scenic drive onto Achill Island, one of Ireland's most spectacular and beautiful places. Achill's rugged landscape features dramatic cliffs, soaring mountains, remote lakes and secluded beaches, pausing for a break in the village of Keel.
This morning we enjoy free time in Westport to enjoy the charisma and continental flavour of this popular town. Cheerful, multi-coloured shop fronts jostle for attention with an attractive selection of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants. Early afternoon we include entry to Westport House, home to the Browne family for over 300 years, tracing its roots back to Grace O’Malley, Pirate Queen of Connaught. Still privately owned, the story of the family’s passion and commitment is told throughout the tour of the house, followed by afternoon tea and scones.
We continue eastwards via Sligo and Enniskillen to Monaghan for overnight half board accommodation at the Four Seasons Hotel.
