After a coffee stop at Houghton Hall Garden Centre, we head north into Northumberland and view Hadrian's Wall, once the north west frontier of the Roman empire. After a short drive we arrive in historic Hexham where you can visit the magnificent Abbey with its beautiful stained-glass windows or wander the cobbled streets of the town centre where you'll discover quirky independent shops, galleries, cafes, and restaurants set around the market square (2.25hr stay).
We then continue through South Tynedale to Alston where you can explore the fascinating Hub Museum (small charge), home to local vintage artefacts and knowledgeable volunteers, or visit the Station Café and if you're lucky see one of the steam trains that run on the heritage line (1.25hr stay).
Entry not included. Leave for home 4.30pm.
