Early departure to Dover for our short crossing to Calais. We continue through France en route to the 3 star Mercure Paris, Velizy for overnight half board accommodation. Tonight’s evening meal is a set menu.

We travel south to the Perigord region of France to Le Bugue for 6 nights half board accommodation at the Hotel Royal Vezere. Tonight’s evening meal is a set menu. Our tour will be accompanied (in Dordogne) by distinguished travel writer Anthony Peregrine who will join us in the region for the duration of our stay.

This morning we visit the stunning Chateau de Milandes. Overlooking the Dordogne River, the place is everything you would imagine a Renaissance castle to be. It is, though, especially famous as the home to raunchy, music-hall performer Josephine Baker - whose risqué routines made her the world's highest-paid female performer in inter-war years. You'll admire her costumes, and learn her life story, as well as appreciating the château's beautiful architecture and gardens. There's also an impressive bird of prey show, followed by an included three course lunch at the site. In the afternoon, we visit Roque St Christophe, a stunning cliff-face settlement, one of the most beautiful sites of the Perigord, occupied by man from pre-history to the Renaissance.

We visit Sarlat the key town of the Dordogne with a magnificently preserved medieval and renaissance centre. On Wednesday mornings, the centre is colonised by one of the region’s more abundant markets. This will work up an appetite for a home-cooked lunch at the nearby Garrigue Haute Farmhouse, set in a deeply rural location. This real working farm will provide us with a proper 'Rural Dordogne' experience. Wine and coffee are included. In the afternoon we drive to La Roque Gageac, one of France’s most beautiful villages, where we take a Gabarre (a traditional flat-bottomed river boat) for a cruise on the Dordogne.

This morning we join the Martel Steam Train for a railway ride alongside the Dordogne River. Later in the day we visit Rocamadour, a stunning medieval village and abbey located on the steep slopes of the River Gorge, overlooking the Alzou Canyon. This is a true architectural gem!

A morning trip to Montignac and Lascaux IV Caves, the brand new, internationally-acclaimed prehistoric cave painting centre. Lascaux cave is the most famous pre-historic cave in the world; it is at the centre of the Dordogne’s pre-eminence in matters pre-historic. The public hasn’t been allowed to visit the cave itself since the 1960s, as their presence damages the 17000-year-old cave paintings. Until now, visitors have been able to see a limited reproduction, Lascaux II, but after significant investment have now created a new centre, which will at last reflect the importance of the site. Around mid-day we drive to Manor of Eyrignac Gardens, family-owned gardens for 22 generations, with sculpted box hedges, inspired by 18th-century designs. We include a three course lunch with wine and coffee and entry to the gardens. A truly memorable day!

We visit the Gouffre de Proumeyssac – the biggest and most ornate developed cave in the Dordogne known as the 'cathedral of crystal', due to the astonishing geo-formations, and the dimensions. These days, they set it all to music, which makes for a pretty impressive visit. Around midday we head off the beaten track and into the heart of the countryside to see how the people live and work as we visit a local truffle-grower (The Dordogne is French Truffle HQ). After a short talk about truffles the lady of the house will demonstrate the art of preparing truffle laden dishes, then there’s a very fine lunch, outside in glorious surroundings. We return to Le Bugue for some free time.

We depart Le Bugue and retrace our journey north returning to the Mercure Paris Velizy for overnight half board accommodation (set menu).

We depart after breakfast and travel to Calais for our sailing to Dover. We disembark and travel north via the main roads and motorways. Arrive home mid-evening.
