Why not join the Bibby's battalion for an unforgettable pilgrimage to the WW1 battlefields... During our previous visits to Ypres we have been very successful in locating graves/memorials of lost relatives. Many people have been on the tour to see for themselves the last resting place of these soldiers and we invite you to be a part of this moving experience. We require the soldiers name, regiment, date of death and Bibby's can trace the cemetery and gravestone. Hopefully the cemetery will be close to the area we are visiting.
The 3 star Hotel Ariane has an excellent location in historic Ypres close to the market square and the Menin Gate. All bedrooms are en suite with TV, telephone, hairdryer, minibar and Wi-Fi. You can enjoy a relaxing meal in the friendly stylish restaurant. It will be a set meal - soup, main course, dessert, coffee and 2 glasses of wine or water. There is a lift.
Early departure to Dover for the afternoon ferry crossing to Calais. Transfer to the historic city of Ypres for 4 nights half board accommodation at the excellent Hotel Ariane.
We enjoy a full day tour of the Ypres Salient taking in the sites of many of the wars major conflicts, these include the Pool of Peace (previously a mine crater), Messines Church where a young Adolf Hitler was wounded, Hills 60 & 62 and Essex Farm (which inspired the famous 'In Flanders Fields' poem). We also visit Tyne Cot the largest British War Cemetery in the World, the resting place for the soldiers who fell at Passchendaele and our final visit is to the German cemetery at Langemark.
A full day to the Somme battlefields including Serre village where many of the Northern Pals fell on the first day of battle. We include an exploration of Newfoundland Memorial Park a tribute to the bravery of the Canadian soldiers, a special visit to the memorial of the missing at Thiepval, the Lochnagar Mine Crater and an emotional visit to Dartmoor cemetery where the personal account of the soldiers experiences will be heard. We also visit the new cemetery at Pheasant Wood where in 2009, in an astonishing discovery, the bodies of 250 British and Australian World War I soldiers were found in unmarked graves near Fromelles. It is the largest war grave to be found in Western Europe in modern times and Channel 4's 'Finding the Lost Battalions' recently told the story of how, over the course of a year, the bodies have been carefully exhumed and many of them identified via DNA matches with living relatives.
We include a visit to Toc-H Museum at Talbot House, Poperinge which became a rare place where soldiers could meet and relax regardless of rank. We return to Ypres for some well earned free time, you can visit the interactive Flanders Field Museum which is located inside Cloth Hall or just relax and sample the delicious Belgian Beer in the ancient town square. Dinner will be served earlier tonight to enable the group to attend the Last Post Ceremoney at the Menin Gate. This moving tribute occurs every evening at 8.00 pm.
