Today we travel to the city of Durham, set on the banks of the River Wear. The historic streets are home to high street favourites, independent shops, quirky craft and antique shops and a wide choice of eateries, all overlooked by the Durham Cathedral and Castle UNESCO World Heritage site (3 hr stay). We then take a short drive to Crook Hall Gardens, on the outskirts of Durham, a series of interlinking gardens, each with its own style and character, set against the backdrop of a Grade 1 listed medieval hall. Explore the maze, secret walled garden, orchard, wildlife-rich moat pool, or take a break in tranquil seating areas with stunning views of Durham city and the cathedral or the Garden Gate Café (2½ hr stay approx.)
