We travel north into Dumfries & Galloway to the vibrant fishing town of Kirkcudbright, located on the River Dee estuary. Its pretty location has attracted renowned artists for many years and there are plenty of independent stores, cafes and galleries for you to explore (1½ hr stay).

Isle of Whithorn is one of the most southerly villages and seaports in Scotland, lying on the coast north east of Burrow Head. During WWII locations around Garlieston, including the harbour and nearby Rigg Bay, were test sites for three Mulberry Harbour prototypes. This area of the Solway Firth was selected because tidal conditions were similar to those to be encountered in Normandy. In addition, the remote location meant that the trials could be undertaken in secret. A really interesting day out!
