Early departure as we travel south to Kent for overnight half board accommodation at the Holiday Inn, Ashford.
After breakfast we depart for Folkestone for our morning Eurotunnel crossing to Calais. We continue via the Opal Coast to Normandy for 4 nights half board accommodation at the Novotel Bayeux Hotel, Bayeux.
This morning we explore Pegasus Bridge and visit the Memorial Pegasus, dedicated to the men of 6th Airborne Division and their role during the Battle of Normandy from June to September 1944. We continue to the coast and Ouistreham for a lunch stop and in the afternoon we visit Merville Battery, a fascinating museum and memorial dedicated to the 9th Battalion the Parachute Regiment whose brave attack on the 6th June 1944 silenced the German guns that were trained on the allied invasion forces. We finish our day with a visit to Ranville Cemetery where a very high proportion of the fallen are British Men from 6th (Airborne) Division.
We explore Sword, Gold and Juno Beaches, the target of the British & Canadian Forces on D-Day where we learn about the brave mission of thousands of troops and their individual battles. We visit Arromanches for lunch and include a visit to the 360 Cinema Museum after which we will see sections of the Mulberry Harbour (a pre-fabricated port that was shipped across the channel to provide a landing site for the allied supplies). In the afternoon we visit the picturesque town of Bayeux, where you will have the chance to view the famous tapestry that depicts the Battle of Hastings in 1066 (price not included).
Our first visit today is the German Cemetery at La Cambe, containing memorials to in excess of 21,000 German military personnel of World War II. We then visit the American Sector and St Mere Eglise, the first town to be liberated in France during WWII, where we visit the Airborne Museum and have time for lunch. In the afternoon we visit Pointe du Hoc, a monument to the American Rangers Battalion who scaled the steep cliffs and seized German artillery positions overlooking Omaha and Utah beaches in June 1944. Later we visit Omaha Beach itself and the American Cemetery and Memorial at Coleville-sur-Mer, a site honouring the thousands of American soldiers who died in Europe during World War II.
We depart early to join the 08:30hrs Brittany Ferries sailing from Caen to Portsmouth. We disembark and continue north arriving into our local area late evening.
